“Speaking to Build Bridges” Part 1
Ballroom A, B
Public speaking is up there with the kinds of experiences humans typically dread. But we have to do this sometimes to inform, to persuade, to entertain—sometimes all three at once. By breaking down the process of speaking to a variety of audiences, participants will learn about strategies for talking to small and large groups. We’ll discuss visuals to aid in speaking, and talk about how visuals can be extremely distracting, too—and how to know which situation is which! We’ll talk about storytelling as a key component of communication and how to weave in data to stories to keep the attention of an audience. We will practice mini-speeches in small groups as part of the workshop activities. Participants will go home with guidelines for public speaking they can use for any future speaking engagements.
